When in a group with a mentor, a low-level character gains experience for leveling up but cannot loot anything, not even quest items, mob disappearing. If the mentor option is cancelled, the character can loot only quest items, in normal way.

Fixed. When the mentor does all the damage, the kill now drops loot for the mentees. Getting only quest items without mentoring is the normal level-gap rule and stays as it is. Live after the next server update.
